Godfrey's Arrow
Godfrey of Bouillon, before beginning the attack on Jerusalem in 1099, prayed desperately for a sign from God to strengthen his resolve.
Taking up his bow for one single shot, he aimed his arrow at a bird in the sky flying next to the Tower of David.
Godfrey released the arrow, leaving the fate of his conquest on what would happen next.
As the arrow made impact and then descended from the sky, it landed on the earth with 3 birds impaled upon it.
An incredible sign of divine providence and future triumph, Godfrey used it as the inspiration for the three alerions on the red diagonal band of his famous shield and the heraldic crest of the province of Lorraine.
This design features those three birds pierced by Godfrey's arrow, as well as the verse, "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord."
