14:29 EDTApril 15, 2013 - A homemade device detonated at the finish line of the Boston marathon killing three; Krystle Marie Campbell, 29; Lu Lingzi, 23; and 8 year old Martin William Richard.
In the initial blast, 264 people were injured while days later on April 18, two more lost their lives; MIT police officer Sean A. Collier, 27 and Boston police officer Dennis Simmonds.
One of the bombers was killed in a shootout while the other, on May 15, 2015, was sentenced to death by lethal injection.
Reacting to the verdict, Dzhokar’s mother Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, in a note sent to a family friend (via ZeeNews), reiterated that her son was innocent while America was “the terrorist”.
The mother’s note was posted on a Russian social networking site, where the note written in Russian translated to, “I will never forget it. May god bless those who helped my son. The terrorists are the Americans and everyone knows it. My son is the best of the best”.
This years Boston Marathon had over 30,000 participants.
